A little slice of white trash livin'

Taken from the Crime Watch section of the Gazette-Times today:

A 33-year-old Corvallis man reported his live-in girlfriend trashed his apartment because he decided to play soccer on Valentine’s Day instead of spending the evening with her. A report said the 29-year-old woman wrote on the walls, smashed beer bottles against the floor and ceiling and dumped a cat litter box “all over his bed.”

Sometimes, it's my favorite section of the newspaper. There are some real gems in there, amidst the DUI reports and meth busts and car break-ins.

As for George and Martha, well, we here at the Corvallist wish them a swift reconciliation. After all, NASCAR season is a-comin'.

  • So, you’ve recently been pretty harsh on the Corvallis “crack whores” and “white trash”. You’re not turning into one of the nouveau conservatives that Corvallis seems to breed?

They arrive to Corvallis seeing an idyllic little town, often seeking refuge from more urban environments, and they espouse very liberal philosophies until confronted with the grimy realities of life. Then they sound very reactionary as they yell “up with the drawbridge!” Before long they turn into curmudgeons that grumble under their breath about teenagers, and vote “no” on everything – just because.

I’m tweaking you a bit. Sorry for that, but the problems of Corvallis are miniscule compared to the real world. We need to figure out what we can do to address the roots of illiteracy, poverty, and general social disadvantage that seem to perpetually grip whole segments of our world. Until we can fix the system, there will be a population that needs a place like the Jason Inn to stay, and they’ll occasionally spill the kitty litter –even right here in Corvallis.

  • No chance of me becoming a "nouveau conservative" any time soon. I agree with adressing the roots, blah blah blah. But sometimes people make incredibly stupid choices and do so in a very public manner. In my opinion, that makes them fair game. I don't care who they vote for.

As far as there being more important issues in the world, this blog is solely focused on Corvallis. There are plenty of world issue blogs out there, but very few that look at what makes Corvallis the town we (or at least I) love. One of the things that makes Corvallis so great is the fact that we do have a very diverse population. I choose to talk about the good, the bad and the ugly in this town, depending on my fancy for the day.

So tweak away! But if what you want is a blog that waxes idealistic about improving social ills without being able to snigger a little at the dumb things humans do (and I do include myself in that broad "human" category), sorry. Can't help you there.

  • Oh. Please. Tone it down. Please remember: Corvallis is perfect and we must not forget. Take your soma and repeat the prescribed mantra. No white trash here. Nope. No way. We all do yoga mornings. No richy rich look down upons. No doctors sleeping with their nurses. No unholy actions like failure to recycle a plastic water bottle.

I used to love the crime report because it was so detailed. I loved the one that described how a woman came out of her house to find a man masturbating in her north Corvallis yard. He offered her twenty for sex. She turned him down and called the cops. I guess her price was higher. Mine would be.

Unfortunately, I see and hear too many things. So, even the up and comings have white trash like secrets. Kind of makes one feel equal. Course we have to keep up some pretences. The faces shroud the facts. We're all human despite our best efforts personally to masquerade as mandatory saints. Corvallis is no different. I'm a little bit white trash myself and I don't mind be called trashy, when it fits, and it often does.

The white richies are just as spectacularly stupid. We're all nobodys on this planet. And we're all going to die.

This is not an idyllic little town and we all know that. We all know prices keep us poor running over to Albany to shop and even live. We have nice parks and bike paths and white trash of all income levels and churches and bars and gossip and shit going down every night in every neighborhood behind closed doors.

  • Anonymous, how about using your name or website or something. In response, I shall match your anonymousness.

You want grimy life? That's my life. Want to go out? And I do believe you clean up the mess at home before you try cleaning up the mess at your neighbors. Get my drift?

If you don't, here's a hint. Corvallis does have problems. If we can't solve anything here, like poverty in Corvallis, why would one try to solve it elsewhere? Yeah our problems here are smaller than other places in the world. That should make them easier to solve. Again, act locally. And some things can't be solved or fixed.

I am being verbose and the Corvallistist is going to ban me for sure. Well, us white trash folk also often poke our noses into the business of others out of sheer boredom and lonliness and the need to feel a bit of importance or belonging.

We often are unemployed or on disability and so have nothing to do and no meaning to our lives whatsoever. Sometimes we stay up half the night online in search of feelings of adequacy and usefulness. We often get into big trouble with not thinking e=mails or posts through before hitting submit or send.

I do admit, I suffer from symptomatic white trashy postings and e-mails. Yup, I'm lonely. I'm going to go throw cat litter into someone's bed. But since I live alone, it'll have to be mine. Now how white trashy is that?

  • This is a neat blog, so thank you, Corvallist!
this is a great town, and I love it. Not much crime, safe, beautiful. I've done my share of stupid shit, but yeah, I like reading the crime report. That could have been me getting a dui, but i was lucky.
    Check out my blog:
inclementreality. I'll try to include more sort of corvallis-relevant stuff from my observations, so you might be interested in it.
