How to keep the kids out of trouble -- Part II
Today marks the opening of the outdoor pools at Osborn Aquatic Center. OAC is fantastic, managing to be both kid and adult-friendly.
The kids mainly want to play outside at Otter Beach, with the waterslide, geysers, water channel and beach entry. There is also an outdoor lap pool, in addition to the indoor Olympic pool and therapy pool for those of us who are not exactly sun-worshippers. There are exercise classes and swim lessons for those who need them, including a junior lifeguard training program and individual lessons if you don't want to be in a swim class with a bunch of hydrophilic toddlers.
Prices are quite reasonable. A pass for the entire summer for one person is $85 (as long as you live in the district) or $140 plus $10 per person covers membership for the entire family. Tickets can also be purchased for single admission or in 15-visit blocks. For the luxury of giving the kids something to do every single afternoon, if they so choose, the 3-month pass is a complete bargain.
Even dogs are welcome, if only for a single day every year. At the end of the season, OAC holds a Dog Day, where people can bring their puppies to play in the outdoor pools.

Hey, anyone out there interested in adopting a kitty? (Sorry, Corvallist, for seeking home options on any and all blogs). Today, two Albany city council people took me to the Albany homeless camp, to help out the cats there. The City of Albany is evicting the homeless from that area in three weeks. Many have a lot of unfixed cats and many of those will end up left behind or taken by the police to the county shelter for euthanasia without intervention. One city councilwoman is working her butt off to find the homeless people who live there homes, jobs and clothes to start those new jobs. So far, she's gotten six or seven of those folks jobs, places to live, cell phones, so they can be called back on job interviews--she's gone all out and another councilman is also helping. These are politicians in action. Today, we went to the camps and ended up hauling out 11 cats, six of them kittens, from one camp alone, with two more cats to go get from that one camp, with two guys living in it. We hauled them out a quarter mile or more, by carrier, down trails and even over train tracks, passing them up person to person as we climbed up over the trains between the cars. Anyhow, I now have four adult females and one adult male to find homes for, plus the two litters of two of the adult females, six kittens total. Cat Descriptions--all tame and sweet: Three adult females, including one with a litter, are torbi's. The other is very young to have two ten day old kittens and all black and extremely grateful. I also have her black brother. This sister brother pair, 6 or so months old, are character cats.
So anyhow, just trying to spread the word. They'll need homes. And there are more out there in the camp. A lot more. Interested in adoption? Contact bluestray@yahoo.com.

I for one, think the Aquatic center sucks!
When I've gone, my choice was swimming in a crappy, tiny lane pool or get kicked out of the brat n mom area- the only worthwhile area on the property, with the mushroom, etc. There were 2 other mom n brat duos, and they still kicked me out.
We just went there the other night to find out it was closed. The hired teeny bopper on the phone told my wife they would be opened--and were not.
I am glad I didn't pay their admission, the one time I did go. Like the Circle of Hope downtown, I say plow the place down and start over.
