Confession Time

I have just started taking a full load of classes at OSU after oh... a long absence. Nearly half my life ago, it seems. As I will still be working full-time and parenting as full-time as the Corvallist offspring will allow, my blog postings will probably be more sporadic. However, my intention is to still keep the blog rolling, so we'll see how it goes.

But the real confession? I was very, very happy about the outcome of the football game this past weekend. This may make me a traitor to my town and my university. But I love Cal. I used to have season tickets just to watch them lose. And they lost horribly, year after year. It was fun rooting for the lowest of the low, the underdog to beat all underdogs, even when they couldn't beat Oregon State at their worst. There was a real camaraderie in watching them blow every lead, fumble at the last minute, and the collective sigh of the alumni section as they watched the Bears hang their heads and schlump out of the stadium, week after week.

Then both teams started winning, and lo, being a die-hard fan has more than paid off this past few years. So I cheer on the Beavers for every game except this one game per year, and boy was it a glorious win for the Bears. Now the Beavers have my permission to win every other game this season... but next week, I hope to see the Cal Bears slaughter the Ducks. Quack this!

  • How do you take a full load and work full time and parent? Are you Wonder Woman or are you on meth?

I once was a student and tried to work three jobs and take a full load of classes and it didn't work out. In fact, less and less sleep really didn't do well for my faulty self esteem. Seemed to increase problems, even when I added caffeine to the mix, something I'd never tried, due to being raised in a religion that did not condone the drinking of the bean juice. So I was a virgin caffeine head and that too didn't mix well with all of above.

How will you do this? 12 or 15 hours of classes, work full time, etc. Do you have a job where you can sleep? I know somep people are that fortunate. But not many.

  • I'm fortunate enough to have a job with some flexibility, so I can schedule my work days around my classes. I consolidated my classes to a couple days a week and I come home and nap right after school.

Other family members are picking up the slack, but there will probably be extra pizza nights and my house will not be sparkling clean again until Christmas. Not that it was anyway, but now I have a valid excuse.

I also gave up caffeine last year, which actually makes it easier to sleep when I need to do so.

  • Good luck, Corvallist, at least that sounds more doable. I had visions of something else entirely. What are you studying?

  • Are you a UC Berkeley graduate? I went there-'87-'93

  • I'm studying Saving the World 101. ;) That's all I'm going to divulge, sorry.

Chris, nope. I never attended Cal. I lived in the East Bay for a couple years and got hooked on the games with a friend and family members who were alumni. This was late '90s, when they were awful.

  • Good. Saving the World will be on your shoulders then, freeing me up to fix more cats. Thank goodness they're offering "Save the World" now. Love it. Hopefully the course is crowded with eager beavers. Young heroes and old. Go for it. Save our world. I will give whomever does save the world, a free fixed kitten.
