The Corvallist

Insert your own "Field gets plowed" joke here.

A couple of weeks ago, Shawn Field was convicted of torturing and murdering his girlfriend's daughter, Karly Sheehan. Wednesday, Judge Janet Holcomb sentenced him to 46 years and 5 months in prison without the possibility of parole. It's enough, especially considering how he'll be treated in prison, where there's an odd hierarchy of acceptable crimes. Killing kids doesn't win you any popularity awards.

Karly was only three when she succumbed to the beatings inflicted by this jackass, while his biological daughter, Kaitlyn, listened from another room. The poor girl ended up testifying against her own father, all 10 years of her, clutching a teddy bear and crying.

I don't know the people involved, but it doesn't matter. These tragedies affect people far outside the inner circle of family and friends. I heard that the radiology technician who had to x-ray little Karly's broken body to survey the damage wept throughout the procedure. She was a tiny little thing.

Several studies show the number one risk factor for child abuse is simply having an unrelated adult male living in the home. Most of the time, the perpetrator is a step-father or mom's boyfriend. As a mom who brought an unrelated adult male into the home after much soul-searching and surreptitious evaluation of said male with Corvallist offspring, I become even more angry when I hear these types of cases, especially when the mom suspects there is a problem and doesn't immediately throw the guy out. You do what you can to protect your kids, I don't care how much you think you're in love.

In this case, Sarah Sheehan was told by a social worker, in no uncertain terms, not to spend the night at Field's house if Karly was with her. She left her daughter in this monster's care anyway. She'll have to carry that burden. That may be more difficult than the sentence Field received.

Finally, I don't understand Field's parents. I understand that love for one's child is unconditional. But they insist he isn't guilty. This is a man who, at 16 years of age, came up with a plan to kidnap the mother of one of his friends to raise money to go skiing in Aspen. He was previously arrested for beating the hell out of his first wife. At what point do you accept that maybe Junior isn't the sweet little thing you thought he was? I wouldn't wish this on anyone, but I wonder how many times they were called about their son and rushed to his defense. "My little angel" syndrome seems more prevalent these days.

  • 46 years? Not enough! The punishment should fit the crime. He should be on Death Row!

  • I heard some things about the people involved from other people. Hearsay. Drug involvement stuff. Was it Kaitlin's mom who was allegedly repeatedly abused by this man? If so, why did she not fight to bring this to a court and get sole custody of Kaitlin, I can't understand. It's unbelieable, the whole thing, that all these folks, the biological parents, etc, chose to keep on in their ways, for their convenience, rather than protect their child from a monster. All the wrong values. All the wrong priorities. I hope none of those involved reproduce an unwanted life again. God bless Karly. I wish this would wake up mothers out there, who place drugs, alcohol, sex, whatever as priorities above the care and protection of their children.

  • Kaitlyn's mom WAS abused by this guy, he hit her, choked her, verbally abused her, the works.
Eileen Field was just a poor mind-f'd single mom who wouldn't suspect that her ex-husband would hurt his own child. On top of that, maybe she didn't want to raise her kid totally alone, and didn't want to have her whole life taken away. Also, it's possible that she didn't have a father figure in her life, and wanted to give her daughter a chance to have what she never had.
Look, Eileen and Karly's mom were both women who fell into the trap of a mind-controlling abuser and I feel sorry for them, and every single battered woman out there, and trust me, there are MANY. People will believe anything, not out of convenience, but because thier minds have been twisted and they can't percieve reality. That's why a good amount of women stay with an abuser for YEARS before dying or leaving.
I feel the most sorry for Kaitlyn right now. She's a really smart sweet kid who's going to be a bit f'd up for a long time and Eileen can't afford counseling. I can only imagine what it was like to hear what was going on in her 10-year-old mind when all that was happening. Maybe I'll see her again soon and I'll see a deadness in her eyes. Then maybe I can give her a hug, if she'll let me, and I can feel better about yet another situation that I can't do anything about.

So, to finish up my rant:
Don't dump on Eileen, don't dump on the sheehan girl. Recognize that they weren't in thier right mind when they were with this monster, and it's the illness of mind control that kept them in those situations. Look around at the people around your, especially your neighbors. Look for signs of abuse of any kind, and do something about it, rather than looking the other way.

  • i am a distant cousin of this horrible man and it makes me sick to think that i am even related ... but i have to wonder if his daughter heard all the beatings where was the mother? and did she just ignore it? or just ignore the signs of abuse? did she know at all? how could she not?
family or not shawn deserved the death penalty.

  • I find it amazing that Karly's parents didn't do more to help her when she was alive. She was a beautiful, precocious child and sooo many people loved her. So why is Glamour magazine honoring her mother who did not protect her own child from Fields...furthermore people have made her father out to be a "victim" as well, even though he continued to let Karly go to Field's home. It's all very horrific, even after two and a half years I still cry when I think about Karly...

  • All three of them should be in jail. It sickens me that Karly's parents have been made out to be victims. Neither even took her to the hospital until CPS intervened. She was a beautiful child and many people were devastated by her death and the thought that she was tortured for 8 long months without either parent doing anything about it. Beyond tragic.

  • What about the people who did the investigations. If they would have done their jobs right. Karly could still be ALIVE!!!!! Just think they are still not doing their jobs right!!!!! Now Our child is in bad hands because of the same investigators as Karly’s case. Our situation is a little bit diffrent, and has been going on for 17 months now. A no contact has been ordered, our kids cant even see each other because of the biological mom’s lies. So please pray for ALL the kids who have been or are in this situation. And Help if you can!!!!!
