More Burright Bullshit
I really thought I was done writing about this guy, but his supporters are apparently still trying to salvage his campaign by discrediting Diana Simpson, the only remaining candidate for sheriff. I guess they gave up on trying to make Burright look good, so they'll try to make Simpson look worse.
A Gazette-Times article this morning listed a website run by Burright supporters who spoofed the web address for Simpson's official site. Simpson's site is www.simpsonforsheriff.net. The other site is http://www.simpsonforsheriff.org. Isn't that clever? Of course, the big red X drawn over Ms. Simpson's face is a bit of a giveaway.
The spoofed site is completely juvenile. One of Diana Simpson's most heinous crimes seems to be her failure to use her husband's surname. The creator of the spoof site is probably the same guy who wrote a letter to the editor some time ago complaining about "Diana Simpson-Godfrey." However, we will never know, because the owner of the site actually registered the address under Diana Simpson's name. (To be fair, I have registered this website with privacy controls to keep my family and work out of the teensy little spotlight this site brings, but I am not pretending to be someone else.)
One of the most hilarious sections of the spoofed site is the list of people who have endorsed or pledged support to Diana Simpson. The list is supposed to demonstrate the "power conspiracy that exists in Benton County." Several names are highlighted red to show their conspiratorial ties to the local educated elite. The reds all seem to be OSU professors and local K-12 teachers. At least the site administrator went back and fixed the spelling of the "Proffessor" designation he had there earlier.
I think free speech is a wonderful thing. I wholeheartedly support the right of "Tim" to express his dismay over the Diana Simpson campaign. But I'm also going to use my right to free speech to point and laugh at his methods. I'm also going to eagerly await the election results to see how successful this guy is at staging a massive Burright write-in vote. Good luck, Tim.

Wow. Is that illegal, registering a domain in someone else's name? I'd like for them to get burned by that, because, as you've shown, it's possible to register a domain and keep the nameholder private.

The person who put up that site is like a little kid, a sore loser, dishonest, deceitful and hateful. Makes you wonder if there is anyone honest or mature in that department. I know you hear that law enforcement personel are by nature kind of type AAA and riding the line of being control freaks. You never want to believe that's true, because they're out there, heavily armed, supposedly defenders of the law and decency and honor. When you see this sort of behavior, the infighting, the distorted truths, the tempers, the poor sportsmanship, at least when I see it, I begin to fear cops, question that there is any hope of ever acheiving equal justice for all, and I avoid them because I wonder if unrest and anger within the department will spill out into the street and road patrols. These folks are heavily armed. They're supposed to be heroes and role models. I hope at least some of them can maintain the high road.

You guys are right about the website it's childish and immature -- Just for the record I work as a Deputy for Benton County and started out as a Burright supporter because I honestly thought he was the best person for the job.
I have nothing against Diana Simpson and think she is a fine person, I just didn't believe she would make a good Sheriff. Has nothing to do with gender and has everything to do with the style of leadership. I hope I am proven wrong and that she will turn out to be a fine leader for Benton County -- and is just a victim of Jim Swinyards leadership style. I have nothing against Jim Swinyard either on a personal level -- I just don't happen to think much of him as a leader as well...
I guess the reason I am writing is to address your concerns about polcie being Type A personalities. I would say that most police officer's are type A personalities but I don't consider myself a control freak. Quite the opposite in fact. I also wanted to point how that I also think the site that Tim Smith put up is quite stupid and juvenile and he is NOT a member of the Benton County Sheriff's Office -- Actually truth be told he WAS a member of the reserve program but ended up getting fired because of the same type of behaviors you are seeing in his web-site. So please don't judge the entire Sheriff's Office on what you read in the paper. Most of us would love to tell you our version of events off-duty over some coffee...

Diana Simpson's being painted with the Jim Swinyard brush.
Most people around town fail to remember that Swinyard spent the majority of his career in the Air Force, having retired as a bird colonel after spending a fair amount of time working in the Pentagon. Former sheriff Dave Cook hired him as his emergency services coordinator and he performed those duties adequately for about seven years. In 1999, former sheriff Stan Robson promoted Swinyard to the position of undersheriff, ahead of several more qualified individuals. Having had no prior experience in either police work or corrections, he quickly attended the police academy in Monmouth and sped through field training to gain police certification. When Robson decided to retire in early 2001, he recommended Swinyard as his replacement. The board of commissioners, concerned that some deputies in the sheriff's office were operating with virtually no policy, procedure or effective supervision under Robson (recall the highly-publicized cases of misbehavior), were looking for someone who would be willing to "kick ass and take names." They looked at former Deschutes County Sheriff Greg Brown, but he was under suspicion for thievery in and out of office, something he was later convicted of and sentenced to prison for. Swinyard provided them with the person they were looking for - someone they could control who would be willing to act as a hatchet man.
Most citizens have probably forgotten that Diana Simpson was not Swinyard's first permanent undersheriff. Against the advice of his experienced managers, he chose former Milton-Freewater police chief, Bob Spinks, over Simpson. Bob lasted only a few months at BCSO. He got himself into trouble, lied about it, then disappeared right around September 11th, at a time when departmental stability was needed most. Swinyard was never held to account for this serious lapse in judgment, which is among the reasons why his deputies despise him so much. Diana came in on the heels of all this and has worked extremely hard to clean up the mess. At the same time, she had to exhibit loyalty to Swinyard at all times, lest she be removed from her position. Truth be known, she probably did more behind the scenes to protect the deputies from Swinyard than they will ever know or admit.
People who think Diana Simpson will be an extension of Jim Swinyard are very much mistaken. She will be her own person and given half a chance, will prove to be a very good sheriff.
